Many homeowners make home improvement decisions based on their current situation. We all go through different phases of life, and our homes should be able to evolve with us through these various stages. In this blog post, I’ll share my top tips and ideas on how you can design a home with the future in mind!
Step 1: Prioritize Your Planning Process
When designing or redesigning a home, making a plan is essential. Understanding which phase of life you’re in right now and how your life is likely to evolve in the next 5-10 years can heavily influence the plans you make for the design of your home. A designer can help you look at the bigger picture and consider your future plans when planning a new home build or renovation; that’s why they should be your first new-build hire. Of course, there will be curveballs thrown in for good measure that you cannot plan for, but having a solid goal and overall plan can keep you focused.
Step 2: Integrate Functionality into Your Design
One of the most important elements of any home is its functionality. Make sure to plan functional areas and elements to make your life easier. These could be built-ins, custom joinery, walk-in or secret pantries, and even electrical wiring for future plans and placement in convenient positions. Organization and providing areas to store household items enhance functionality and shouldn't be overlooked.
Step 3: Invest in Superior Finishes
You can never go wrong by investing in high-quality finishes for your home. If you invest in the right areas, those materials will last a lifetime! I typically recommend that clients invest in quality materials that are used daily for high-traffic areas of the home. You can balance this investment in finishes with other areas of the house (for example, furniture in spaces that rarely get used or accessories and finishing touches).
Designing a home that evolves with family life through the years stems from good, quality choices made with timelessness in mind. Invest in high-quality materials with timeless coloring to see you through your lifetime. I have had the pleasure of guiding many homeowners through designing a home that evolves with them, and I would love to help you, too!
